LIGHT PAINTING PHOTOGRAPHY
Light painting photography is a unique and complex photographic process that is created in the dark. It utilizes specially modified LED lights and/or powerful high-speed strobe lights to create a series of images of a stationary subject, usually on location.
Once the subject is placed, it cannot move until all of the exposures have been made. With each exposure, Joe will light small portions of the image from different angles to bring out the details of the subject. Then, he will do the same thing, all over again, to light the rest of the whole scene as well.
The process requires making dozens of images during the actual photography session. The whole photographic process, setting everything up, waiting for it to get dark (for outdoor projects), and the actual light painting, usually takes 2-3 hours.
The best of those images, are then combined in post-production and “painted” into a single, one-of-a-kind, high-definition image. Post-production can take anywhere from 1-4 hours!
This unusual photographic technique highlights the subject’s details in a way that is simply not possible with any other lighting method.
The icing on the cake is when we print your finished light painted artwork on aluminum! It’s done through a sublimation process. Your finished image is infused into a coated aluminum substrate. It looks absolutely amazing!
Mr DeFabis is one of a very select group of photographers worldwide to employ this type of image creation for motorsports photography. His work is very popular with Indy car teams, vintage race car owners, museums, and fans of motorsports in general.
